The Under-19 inter-school cricket encounter between Ananda and Prince of Wales ended in a thrilling finish at Moratuwa yesterday. The Anandians in fact had a great escape as the Cambrians in pursuit of 203 runs took up the challenge and went short by only four runs.

The second day’s proceedings saw Prince of Wales in reply to Ananda’s score of 147 resuming on their overnight score of 113 for 5 going on to make 171.

Ananda batting the second time going in for quick runs succeeded as they posted a score of 226 for 7 in 45 overs of batting thanks to a knock of 65 by Kushil Perera and useful knocks contributed by Isira Laksanka, Sahan Arachchige and Nipun Chamika. Prince of Wales in their run chase of 203 saw their allrounder Shanuka Dulaj, who has been in top form this season, and Vihanga Weerakkody, who both cracked half tons, taking the lead but was unlucky and had to be satisfied with a first inning win. Kavinda Udapola and Nimesha Gunasinghe who together nine wickets to record a first inning win over D.S. Senanayake College in the match concluded at Wijerama Mawatha.

S. Thomas’ despite conceding a first inning lead to St. Peter’s put up a fine batting display in the second innings. Their openers, Lahiru Opatha and Yohan Mendis, put on a blistering 159 runs stand before they were separated in the match played at Mt. Lavinia.
Tharindu Ratnayake, the dual purpose bowler of S. Thomas’, ended with a match bag of 9 for 79 which saw him reach the 50 wicket mark.

Richmond too had to be satisfied with a first inning against St. Joseph’s in the match played at Darley Road. Richmond having bowled out the home team for a score of 202 ended day one on 134 for 3 and then declared their innings on 267 for 9 yesterday.
A seven wicket haul by Yohan Soysa turned the game in favour of St. Benedict’s against St. Sebastian’s in the match played at Kotahena which helped his side gain a first inning win.

Up in the northern district in Jaffna, St. Sebastian’s Katuneriya registered a first inning win over St. Patrick’s in the match played at St. Patrick’s in Jaffna. St. Sebastian’s batting first made 169 and restricted the Patricians to a score of 127.

Wesley take honours at Asgiriya

By dint of a superior batting and bowling display, Wesley was able to dismiss Trinity 103 behind their total and apply the follow on at Asgiriya. Obstinate knocks from Ravin Sayer, Naveen Ekanayake and S. Sanojith took Trinity near the intended target. Earlier skipper Ron Chandragupta fought hard for his 33.

The pace-spin combination of Jonathan Caderamanpulle and Sachin Jayawardena was responsible for the bulk of the wickets. Trinity’s batting might was in evidence second time round. For starters, Madhawa Munaweera made an attacking 50. Skipper Chandragupta made an exciting 89-ball knock of 98, with 10 fours and three sixes. Jayawardena ended with a bag of six wickets.
