Marata Arafa Central College,is a proud Tamil medium school in the zone which will be reaching its 125th anniversary in 2013. Presently it is a 1 AB national school which has more than 1800 students and 63 teachers. Arafa CC took first place in the district at the Best Annual Report and Accounting competition between National Schools in 2011 and was chosen as one of the best schools in the island among 66 schools by the President Mahinda Rajapaksa to win valuable school equipment to mark its 66th birthday. This was a great honour to the school.

This veranda school which functioned in the house of Seyed Musthafa Notharis Hajiar (Great Notaris) for a long time since 1888 was the forerunner to the present Arafa Central College. Later in 1901 the veranda school shifted to a hut at the place where the college’s present junior section is situated. This is due to the huge effort of “Hidhayathul Islam” in order to start a government Tamil medium school in the Weligama region. In 1946 the school started functioning as two separate sections -Primary and Junior – under two separate principals as English and Tamil medium schools. Under the able administration of the late Al-haj Veffa these two sections integrated in 1951and the S.S.C (Ordinary Level) classes commenced during the same year.

Present Principal Mr.J.S.W.A.Moulana

The school progressed gradually. As a result the land called “Hettiwaththa” was acquired by the government and the school earned the Maha Vidyalaya status with H.S.C (Advanced Level) classes being conducted in 1961. The year 1980 was a cherished year for the school which earned them the Central College Status after 92 long years. Another significant event took place at the school in 1985; the 107th “Mahapola Exhibition” brought fame as well as and many other facilities to the school. Finally Arafa Central College elevated to the National School level in 1994 and the English Medium section was started in 2007.

The administration was handed over to Mr.J.S.W.A. Moulanain in 2006. He was the 30th principal of the school. He invested his skills, knowledge and experience to push the college to a new era. As a result the College is able to provide the students many more facilities which includes the College hostel, playground, well equipped laboratories, a well maintained library, Computer unit, and a Bi-lingual unit as well.

College Environment

Education has been the measured effort of the administration since its inauguration. The Grade 5 scholarship examination annually brings a lot of credit to the college. This year 13 students got through the examination with high marks. G.C.E. (O/L) always produces a considerable amount of achievements. Presently they enjoy more than 80% results at G.C.E.(O/L) examinations.
