In response to the violence, abuse and pain in our communities,

Students of the art club of American National College respond with ‘Change Within’

An art and sculpturee xhibition that will respond to burning social issues silently. A visual expression- a powerful medium. Students of ANC Education have taken a bold step to organize anawareness lecture and open forum, together withan Art competition and Exhibition.

That will discuss the many harassing and menacing issues that teenagers, the young and old alike are faced with today.

The visual Arts, is a very powerful tool that any community could use when many other forms of communication has failed, and dilapidated.

The development of any country depends on the complexion and quality of its youth population, and how much any country invests in them, to make sure they contribute effectively and productively to the development and growth of the country.

When any country has an outburst of substance abuse, and often as a result, there’s violence directed domestically. Young people, who cannot possibly manage their hormonal imbalances and carnal desires, drop themselves to the level of creatures of the forests, as they break every rule and religious teaching. This is when a young woman who’s raped will need to abort that fetus. It is when two people forget what they are doing until they find out there’s a life growing within. Even if we pass laws for abortion, are we also going to pass laws permitting kids out of wedlock?

Who is taking responsibility for all the rape and Mayhem that is going on while ignorance is bliss? What has suddenly happened to all the Dharmishta, peace loving citizens of Lanka?

What about all those women and children who go to work and school, the next day with purple and blue patches concealed by their garments?

Is there a suite that stands up for men and women alike who are beaten up and float in rivers and canals, in the middle of town?

Exhibits depicting Violence, Abuse, Pain and Fear; all repercussions of society’s negligence towards Taboo social issues.

This is why; peace loving law abiding citizens should join hands to show that their voice is a silent yet powerful force. It is with effective communication in mind that we have come together to organize this art competition and exhibition on the 30th of November to and December. The awareness conference will be on the 15th of October, at the Royal skills center, Royal College, Colombo 7.starting at 3.30 p.m. A very eminent panel of guest speakers will speak on why abortion, what makes violence, and child abuse. Students in A/L grades and university students are welcome to participate. Please confirm your presence by calling one of our numbers given.

The art competition will be based on the same topics and the participant may explain the art work with any amount of freedom. You may use any medium and use a manageable size and surface. Not smaller than A3. Any medium may be used. The creative nature of the work and ability to communicate how change within each person would change the world must be brought out. Closing date for entries will be the 10th of November, and to be handed in to ANC R.A. De Mel mawatha, Colombo 3.

This is an event to be marked in your diary and await the excitement of how our student population is going to analyze one of the most critical and complex issues in our country. Let us learn the concept of community art, and working through the hearts and minds of burning issues to create works of Art as Aristotle once said, ‘The catharsis of the mind’ is the therapy we need to heal the wounds of our children and youth, our mothers and our brothers. The purging of our sadness must be transformed to positive change through the medium of art. It is a silent yet powerful tool that can change you and me.
