IELTS was one of the pioneers of four skills English language testing over 21 years ago, and continues to set the standard for English language testing today. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most popular high stakes English language test, used mainly for academic study abroad and migration. It enjoyed 12% growth globally last year.

In Sri Lanka, the British Council is the leading service provider for English Language Education and true to its role provides extensive support for IELTS candidates in many ways: in teacher support, candidate preparation support, and exam access.

The British Council Teaching Centre conducts IELTS preparation courses and workshops to help candidates prepare for the exam. There are different options candidates can choose from based on the current level of language proficiency. Irrespective of whether you have studied at the British Council or not – at the time of registration for the test at the British Council all candidates get a host of other benefits, completely free.

These include a free practice book and a CD, a free 30-hour internet based preparation course, and free reference library membership at the British Council English Language Zone. Every month, the British Council conducts 3 free seminars in Colombo and Kandy, by one of our British Council examiners, where candidates can get tips to face the IELTS test with more confidence.

“IELTS is a test of English language proficiency. Practice is vital if you want to succeed. That is why we are keen to provide additional support for candidates who register for the test at the British Council,” says Harriet Gardner, the Country Exams Manager.

The British Council conducts IELTS tests in Colombo and Kandy mainly, while a limited number of sessions are conducted in centres in Mt.Lavinia, Negombo, Welisara, Matara, Jaffna and Batticaloa. Candidates from these areas are advised to check the schedules with the British Council and book an exam date.

IELTS candidates can register for the test through the internet, or by visiting the British Council offices in Kandy and Colombo or through nearly 70 British Council IELTS registration centres located island-wide in Colombo, Kandy, Matara, Galle, Tangalle, Anuradhapura, Jaffna, Batticaloa, Kalmunai, Kurunegala, and Vavuniya.

The IELTS Sri Lanka Facebook page is a focal point for those interested in knowing more about IELTS. It serves as an interactive platform for candidates to come together to share information, tips and find out more about IELTS activity in Sri Lanka.
