St. Benedict’s skipper Jason shines in drawn game

St. Benedict’s skipper Jason Perera shone with an all-round performance against St. Peter’s while opener Shasheen Fernando led the home sides fight-back in the drawn Under 19 inter-school cricket encounter at Bambalapitiya yesterday.

Jason who made a blistering 140 with 20 boundaries on the opening day followed it up with a four wicket haul on day two with Shasheen making a fighting knock of 124 which included 19 boundaries and a six.

This was Jason’s third ton for the season and he was involved in two fruitful partnerships - the first with his opening partner Praveen Gunawardena adding 108 runs and the other of 97 runs for the fourth wicket with Sameera Sandamal which helped the to Bens make a formidable 308 for 6 declared.
Shasheen’s knock enabled St, Peter’s resuming from their overnight score of 49 for 2 to make a bold reply of 306 as he put on a 128 runs stand for the fifth wicket with Thanusha Jayawardena who made 56.

St. Peter’s were well placed on 257 for 6 at the tea break before Jason, who changed his right arm pace to spin, came into the attack and grabbed four wickets to restrict the Peteriites.
An all-round performance of 8 for 44 and 112 n.o. by Ashan Ranasinghe was the highlight of the drawn Under 19 inter-school between St. Aloysius Galle and St. Thomas Matara concluded at Galle yesterday. St. Aloysuis talking first lease of the wicket made 211 and St Thomas in their turn made 224 for 7 before declaring.
