TT triple for Rohan Sirisena

Sri Lanka’s number one Rohan Sirisena bagged a triple and leading woman player Ishara Madurangi a double at the Ashok Melvani Memorial Open All-Island Ranking Table Tennis tournament conducted at the Jagath Rajapaksa International Indoor Stadium in Peradeniya yesterday.

Sirisena who got the better of a former champion of 2008 Buddhika Walagampala in the final, did not have things his own way. In fact he was down a set after three and had to pull out all the stops to overcome his Air Force colleague.

Sirisena teamed up with Milinda Lakshitha to win the men’s doubles and with Ishara Madurangi to annex the mixed doubles title. Madurangi missed out on a triple crown when she and her partner were defeated in the semi-final of the women’s doubles event.

Under fifteen player Umaya Tharakie of Dharmasoka annexed the Under-15 title, but lost the Under-18 final to Ruwani Kannangara of Methodist College and the women’s event to Madurangi. A creditable performance from her nevertheless. Vidyartha’s highly-rated Udaya Ranasinghe won the boy’s Under-18 event, but was upstaged in the Under-15 final by Sokian Warusavithana.
