Diyathalawa Central’s rise to the top

By Sujitha Miranda

Diyathalawa Central College (Diyathalawa Maha Vidyalaya) is the leading school in Haputhale Electorate. This school has shown its colours in academic and non-academic fields with the guidance of a dedicated staff. It has risen to this spot within a short span of 35 years.

Principal R.M.Thilakarathna (SLPS 2)

In 1976 the school was established as a primary school with 14 students by its first principal Mr. H.M. Muthubanda. The service rendered by the past principal Mr. Premasiri Ekanayake as well as the teachers who are a devoted lot themselves brought recognition to the school. In 1996 the school was converted as a secondary school and was placed under 1 C group and was promoted as a Maha Vidyalaya.

At present nearly 100 academic staff are providing primary and secondary education for nearly 1700 students. Yearly almost 400 students from Haputhale electorate, enroll for grade one classes. This shows the success and the reputation of the school. The present principal Mr.R.M. Thilakarathna (SLPS 2I) is a great strength to the administration, by keeoing the teachers and students under his constant supervision.

The school is equipped with a range of facilities such as IT Unit, Science laboratory and Aesthetic sections. As a result they have gained so many victories in academic as well as in the extracurricular field.

D.M.V. maintains an excellent record in both academic and non-academic fields. The grade 5 scholarship keeps the school on top of Haputhale electorate. Yearly the highest numbers of students from this school get through the examination by bringing a spark to the school. This year 24 students got through the examination while 4 of them obtained over 175.

Every year D.M.V. excels academically, by producing some of the best G.C.E. (O/L) results in the Haputhale electorate. In 2010 three students of this school got 8A’s & 1 B and 15 student got more than 6 A’s in their G.C.E. (O/L) examination.

The new advanced level classes started only in Commerce and Art streams in 2008 and the first batch sat for the examination last year. One student of that batch entered the university. Though they started the Advanced level class in 2008, they have produced many outstanding personalities. Dr.Anurudha Padaniya, President of Sri Lanka Doctors’ Association is the best amongst them. Many D.M.V. students have excelled as Army Majors, Higher officers, Scientists and government officers all over the world.

Sport in the other area where the Diyathalawa M.V. students have shone. They are best in Track and Field events. Brian Dananjaya Augustine, Udayalankara and Aravinda Dissanayake are few of their best known athletes. D.V.M. has the highest number of scouts (123) in the Uva Province and they are a shining example to the school.

The D.M.V. students have done well in Language , Dancing, Art and Music competitions too and have brought Provincial and National level medals to the school. Diyathalawa Maha Vidyalaya has organized a Grand Piritha Ceremony on December 6 , 2011, to mark 35 of existence and to bless the children who are sitting for the G.C.E. (O/L) examination this year.

Starting as a poor village school and reaching up to the top level in Haputhale Electorate is not an easy task. The dedication, team work, capability and the devotion of the principal and staff are the secrets of the school’s success.
