Huzahir, Morais and Waduge excell at Kandy tennis

Shabeer Huzair, Joshua Morais and Nethmi Waduge excelled to take away major honours at the Kandy Garden Club all-island open ranking tennis tournament 2011 which concluded on Tuesday (September 6) in Kandy. Huzair pocketed a triple while Andre Muttiah, Morais and Waduge clinched a double each.

Muttiah beat Jerique Rajapakse 6-0, 6-0 in the Under-12 singles final and then partnered by Diluka Kavinda defeated Ananda Gunawardhana and B. Suren in the Under-14 double event.

Morais won the Under-16 boys singles title by defeating C. Kuganeshan 6-3, 6-3 in the final and then pairing with S. Huzair beat Mohamed Amri and Mohamed Naveed to annex the Under-18 doubles title.
Top seed Waduge continued her top form to annex both Under-14 girls singles and women’s open singles titles. She beat Gaveshini Abeygunawardhane 6-0, 6-0 and then Sherene Wijesinghe 7-5, 7-5 in the respective finals.

Huzair was the winner in the boys Under-18 singles and doubles as well as men’s open doubles events. He beat Morais 6-2, 6-2 in the singles and then partnered by Morais beat Naveed and Amri 7-5, 6-0 in the Under-18 doubles final. Pairing with Manoj, Huzair beat F. Mohamed and Morais 6-4, 6-3 in the men’s open doubles final to complete his triple. Kandy Garden Club together with Sri Lana Tennis Association conducted the event.
