Maiden Kaffir baila CD

Kaffir Stella with Butterflies’ which will be held to coincide with the release of the maiden album of Ceylon Kaffirs will be staged at the on Tuesday, 5 April at 7.00p.m. at the John de Silva Memorial Theater, Colombo.

The event and the album is an initiative of Tho DORA (Theater Institute for Disability Oriented Research and Advocacy) which ahs been working with differently abled persons for many years as well as less privileged sections of society to develop their skills in the fields of art.

This is the first time that the Ceylon Kaffir’s unique blend of music is sung in a language which is a mix of an African dialect as well as Portuguese is been recorded as a music CD in an attempt to further popularize their melodies.

The community of Kaffirs was brought to Sri Lanak from South Africa by the Portuguese during the time the later ruled the island nation. This community has managed to retain their vibrant customs in spite the passing of many decades since they arrived here.

The event is choreographed by Ramani Damayanthi and the music is by Janaka Fonseka. The event is sponsored by the Centre for Poverty Analysis.
