We know it’s unhealthy but who can resist fast food? From take-out at parties to the treat diet watchers reward themselves to after surviving a week on veggies; fast food is satisfying. But what if fast food, wasn’t as unhealthy? And what if the simple burger experience is taken to a whole new level by making it a gourmet dish?
Sanjeewa Wijeratne and Suresh Edirisinghe are exploring the possibilities with ‘Burger Blast’.
Located down Maitland Place, opposite NCC, they opened Burger Blast in November last year. Having been struck by the idea, they put it together in no time.
“Everything is made in-house,” says Sanjeewa explaining “the buns are baked here in the morning and evening, we make our own sauces, the chefs pick out the freshest vegetables and the patty is 100% meat—there are no breadcrumbs mixed in it.” He goes on to say that they have an open kitchen at the entrance “so all of Colombo can see what goes on inside,” adding that they don’t have a microwave as they prepare the food as soon as you make your order.
Burgers they’d recommend are the lamb burger and the mushroom burger. With lamb available in Sri Lanka being of indifferent quality, they import lamb from Australia for the burger. The large patty is topped with pickles, crunchy cucumber, a spicy onion mix, cheese and more, making each bite a flavoursome esperience with a blend of textures.
The mushroom burger isn’t just an option for vegetarians. Made to a special recipe the burger is one of their more popular burgers and is enjoyed even by non-vegetarians.
Highly recommended on their ‘drinks list’ is the Oreo Milkshake. Blended to perfection it’s creamy and thick with Oreos. While revamping their menu, apart from the milkshakes, Sanjeewa and Suresh also plan to include sandwiches with options of brown bread for the health conscious customers.
Burger Blast is also about ambience and chilling out.For those who aren’t picking up an order from the ‘drive through’, the design of the dining area is chic and sleek, and offers both an indoor and outdoor dining experience. What’s more, Burger Blast has a private room that can be rented out for business meetings, parties and movie nights or karaoke with friends.
Adding a bit of class to fast food, Burger Blast is innovative with its recipes that according to Sanjeewa are the best you’ll find in Colombo.
