APIIT- Nurturing quality professionals and future leaders

The Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology (APIIT) Sri Lanka was established over a decade ago in partnership with APIIT Malaysia and Staffordshire University, UK and, with the objective of promoting quality and diversity in higher education through global partnerships. APIIT has been successful in winning the confidence of the public as a leader in high quality tertiary education in Sri Lanka. The quality of education is the outcome of seamless integration of several spheres of activity including the selection of appropriate programmes, effective teaching, and provision of outstanding resources, creation of a supporting academic environment and value system, and efficient management.

Winner of the Gold Medal for BA (Hons) Business Administration at the APIIT Convocation 2010 with Prof. Mike Goodwin Dean, Faculty of Computing, Engineering & Technology of Staffordshire University, UK and Dr. Athula Pitigala-Arachchi, CEO APIIT.

To put it in a nutshell, the British degree programmes are selected and appropriately modified to suit the Sri Lankan context; the faculty is recruited on the basis of qualifications and competence in teaching; the resources provided for teaching/ learning are of international standard and create an environment conducive to the pursuit of knowledge; and finally, APIIT is managed by educationalists with extensive experience in all aspects of higher education - teaching, student assessment, curriculum development, programme evaluation, research, education policy, institutional governance and management, and international higher education, to name a few.

APIIT now offers the largest choice of internal British Degree programmes in Sri Lanka in the fields of Computing, Applied IT, Management and Law. These degrees are exclusively from Staffordshire University, which is one of the top universities in Britain for business management, computing and legal studies. Students can either complete the entire degree programme in Sri Lanka or transfer to an affiliated university either in Britain or in Australia to complete the programme, and thus forming part of an international collaboration in cross border education. Thus, APIIT is the place for students who would like to continue their studies in a foreign destination as well as for those who would like to obtain a foreign degree in Sri Lanka.

The cornerstone of APIIT's success has been its uncompromising commitment to excellence in quality and standards of higher education programmes. Our management system has been accredited as conforming to ISO 9001:2008 international standards, and a comprehensive quality assurance framework is in place to ensure that the learning experience at APIIT is consistent with the standards of British higher education.

Winner of the Gold Medal for B.Sc. (Hons) Business Information Technology being congratulated by Dr. Athula Pitigala-Arachchi, CEO APIIT at the APIIT Convocation 2010. Looking on is Prof. Mike Goodwin Dean, Faculty of Computing, Engineering & Technology of Staffordshire University, UK.

APIIT provides fully furnished, soundproof classrooms with air conditioning where computer aided teaching takes place in a friendly, student-focused environment. The library has a comprehensive collection of textbooks, journals and CDs, and provides access to several renowned e-libraries that are among the world's best stores of information. The computer laboratories reflect the latest technological advances in relation to networking, machine configuration and software. The mobile computing Lab, funded by IRQUE grant of the World Bank, is utilized for research and development.

APIIT Law School is a manifestation of student centred learning system as it provides the means of practical study through facilities such as the unique moot court, tutorial rooms and ample library and IT resources to utilize.

Students can get the maximum benefit of their investment while enjoying the undergraduate years with numerous extra-curricular and entertainment activities as well as social work, organised by the active APIIT Student Activity Club. APIIT academic programmes are professionally administered and managed. There is absolutely no peer pressure and programmes finish exactly on the scheduled date. There aren't any delays or alterations in the programmes once students are halfway through the course, thus making APIIT degrees cost and time effective. The highly qualified full-time faculty at APIIT, equipped with the most up-to-date knowledge and goodwill, is dedicated to help students attain their goals.

Being a private sector higher education institute to win a World Bank Grant under the 'Improving Relevance and Quality of Undergraduate Education' Project has helped APIIT to enhance its contribution to education and manpower development in the country. The aim of this Project at APIIT is to enhance the skills and standard of its computing graduates to produce highly employable professionals. Winning the World Bank Grant was one occasion when APIIT's emphasis on high standards and quality of education has been recognised and rewarded. Prominent among the annual activities under the World Bank Project is the 'APIIT Merit Scholarships' programme that provides wide social benefit. Talented students with high scores at A/L examination and low financial means are awarded a scholarship that covers the total of their higher education expenses for all 3 years. Ten students are awarded scholarships every year. This gives the opportunity for promising rural students to study for a British Degree at the APIIT City Campus in Colombo.

A digital English Language laboratory has been established as another project activity that is meant to improve the English Language proficiency of students enrolling at APIIT. Thus, language need not be a barrier to study at APIIT and even students from the remote areas of the country are able to obtain a British qualification.

Amidst many other activities of the World Bank Project, 'Improving Industry Collaboration' is vital. Through this activity, undergraduates are given semester breaks to join leading companies in the country for several months as per the arrangements made by the APIIT Industrial Collaboration Unit that maintains professional links with the Industry. While directing students to take industry placements, professionals in the field are also invited to conduct seminars and workshops. A career database has been developed so that employers and undergraduates are linked at a very early stage. The industry experience and links give APIIT graduates an edge over others possessing similar qualifications and APIIT graduates are highly valued in the job market.

APIIT is an embodiment of quality in higher education; the standard of education is highlighted by the high performance of its graduates. The percentage of graduates with first classes is on the rise with increasing numbers of admissions every year.

APIIT students graduated thus far have obtained employment within a maximum period of six months, many securing employment even before the Convocation; this again speaks volumes for the unmatched quality of education students receive. APIIT's achievements and high standards are its pride and nothing more is needed to guarantee that students get a lot more than they invest and they leave the institution with a wealth of knowledge, skills and experiences. Surely, it's more than a degree that you will receive at APIIT. Students wishing to experience the APIIT Advantage and enrol for the next intake scheduled to commence on June 20, are advised to contact the Admission Office on 2675060 or info@apiit.lk, or visit our state- of- the- art City Campus at 388, Union Place, Colombo 2.
