SLASSCOM 'FutureCareers' at EDEX 2011

Sri Lankan IT BPO body SLASSCOM recently announced that it would be holding a "FutureCareers" job opportunities programme at the Royal College Union-organised 8th EDEX career fair to be held on January 22-24 at the BMICH in Colombo and on January 26-27 at the Kandy City Centre.

This programme follows the organisation's recent entry into a "strategic partnership" with the career fair which will result in it setting up a pavilion at EDEX 2011 Expo. Further, according to SLASSCOM's announcement, the "FutureCareers" programme will attempt to build the talent pool for the IT BPO industry, which is "projected to grow by 26% in 2011 with export earnings estimated at US$ 390 million for 2010."

The announcement also indicated that "Dialog, HSBC, Providence, RR Donnelly, Innodata Isogen, MMBL Cyber Skills, Virtusa, IFS, Hsenid, Mphasis and Infomate" to be featured employers at the event, with some even conducting walk-in job interviews.

According to SLASSCOM Vice President and Director Madu Ratnayake; “We aim to leverage the EDEX platform to primarily focus on creating awareness among youth about the benefits of selecting IT or BPO as a career path. Our aspiration is to attract large number of youth to join the fast growing IT-BPO industry in Sri Lanka.” Also revealed was that the organisation would show a "short documentary on the careers in IT BPO industry with the endorsement of Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and ICTA."
