A day full of upsets

Thewuni Devaraja created an upset when she defeated bottom seed Hasinghi Lokuge in the semi-final in the girls’ under-14 singles event at the Cinnamon Lakeside Tennis Championship held at their courts yesterday.

Devaraja took the first set easily on 6/1 and was leading 4/1 in the second set when Lokuge was forced to concede the match due to illness and could not continue to play. She will now meet top seed Nethmi Waduge in the final.

Waduge beat third seed Kavindya de Silva 6/3, 7/5 in the other semi-final. Third seed Jayathma Nawaragodagedera created another upset when she beat top seed Rukshana Abdeen in the girls’ under-12 semi-final.

She won in straight sets and will now meet bottom seed Fathoum Issadeen in the final. Issadeen had a comfortable win 6/1, 6/1 over Gaveshini Abeygunawardena in the other semi-final. Unseeded Inzam Irfan also created an upset when he defeated bottom seed Yasitha de Silva in straight sets 6/2, 6/3 to enter the final in the boys’ under-18 event.

Irfan of Indian origin has displayed good form in the recent tennis tournaments held this past one month. Irfan played impeccably and forced his opponent into making mistakes. Top seed Nishangan Nadarajah is the other finalist when he defeated Aritha Weerasinghe in a three setter in the other semi-final.

Fourth seed Nishangan Nadarajah upset bottom seed Aaron Assauw to enter the final in the boys’ under-16 singles event. Nadarajah won in straight sets 6/3, 6/2 in the semi-final. The other semi will be played between Aritha Weerasinghe and Yasitha de Silva.

Third seed Nabeel Sabri also created an upset when he defeated top seed Joshua Jayarathna in straight sets to enter the final in the boys’ under-12 event. This is the not the first time that Jayarathna lost to Sabri who has displayed improvement in his game in recent times.

Fourth seed Nadir Nazar also created an upset when he defeated bottom seed Anthony de Silva in straight sets to enter the final in the same age group. The boys’ under-14 semi-final match between unseeded Harsha Peiris and eighth seed Akila Vimukthi saw Peiris win in straight sets to enter the final.

Third seed Nishangan Nadarajah and Sandesh Mendis also created an upset when they defeated top seeds Venuka Hulangamuwa and Danushka Abeywardena in straight sets to enter the final in the boys’ under-14 doubles event.Sanjive Mohankumar and Avishka Perera defeated unseeded Nabeel Sabri and K. Rajendrasingham in straight sets in the other semi-final.

Innthujan Selvarathnarajah emerged as the champion in the boys’ under-10 event when he defeated B.K. Tharaka 9/5 in the final.
