Spinner Amila guides St. Sebastian’s to second win

Left arm spinner Amila Aponso with a six wicket haul guided St Sebastian’s to record their second successive outright win. Amila’s impressive figures of 6 for 23 helped the home team notch up a massive innings and 227 runs win over St Anne’s Kurunegala in their Under 19 inter-school cricket encounter concluded at Moratuwa yesterday.

Amila in the process ended with a match bag of 9 for 25. The massive win was initiated by Marlon Fernando and Charith Fernando who made knocks of 118 and 108 respectively helping the home side amass a mammoth 354 for 7 declared.

The Annites in their turn put up a pathetic batting performance as they succumbed to the right and left spin combination of Marlon Fernando and Amila Aponso who shared seven wickets between them as they were bundled out for a meager 29.

The Annites made to follow on with a massive deficit of 325 runs were again mesmerized by spinner Amila who made them struggle for runs again. Annites having lasted only 14 overs in the first innings batting a further 14 overs were perilously placed on 35 for 5 with Amila bagging four of them.

The second days play lasted only seven overs with the Sebs needing just under 30 minutes to rattle their opponents with Amila adding another two wickets who along with Vishan Fernando sent the Annites reeling to a score of 63.

Trinity in line for their fifth win

Trinity who have won four matches in a row have put themselves in line to secure their fifth consecutive win when they had Thurstan struggling for survival when play stopped for lunch on day two in their Under 19 inter-school cricket match at Asgiriya.The morning session saw Trinity resuming from their overnight score of 168 for 7 ending their innings making a score of 243. The inning was highlighted by a knock of 100 by Kavinda Jayasuriya and an unbeaten 59 by Janishka Premasinghe.

Kavinda’s knock made form 146 balls included ten boundaries while Janishka’s knock had five boundaries with the pair adding a valuable 108 runs stand for the eighth wicket.
Thurstan were shot out for 106 in the first inning on day one. Batting for the second time the visitors were struggling once again on 66 for 4 at lunch still needing another 75 runs to save them from defeat with two sessions of play left.

Akila and Savin rescue DSS

Openers Akila Weerasinghe and Savin Cyril came to the rescue of DSS with a opening wicket stand of 105 runs helping the side to go into lunch on day two on 234 for 6 in reply to Ananda’s 318 in their Under 19 match played at Ananda Mawatha.

Akila made a knock of 59 while Savin was unbeaten on 62. The opening days play saw Ananda taking first lease of the wicket helped by half tons from Thushara Samarakoon, Sachitra Perera and Geshan Wimaladharma make a formidable score of 318 while DSS ended the day on 66 for no loss.

Waruna and Jason lead Bens fight back

Waruna Fernando and Jason Perera led St Benedict’s fight back on the second day with 100 runs partnership for the fourth wicket against Royal in their Under 19 encounter played at Reid Avenue.
St Benedict’s were in deep trouble on the opening day when they were shot out for just 66 after Royal taking first lease of the wicket declared their innings making a formidable 260 for 9.

Even then Royal too underwent some anxious moments with five of their top order batsmen back in the pavilion with the score on 86. It was Milan Abeysekera and Heshan Kumarasiri who came to their rescue with a 147 runs stand for the sixth wicket.

Later pacies Imran Khan and Bhanuka Rajapakse had the Bens in shambles with the pair sharing seven wickets between them to bundle out the visitors for a paltry 66.

The second day’s play yesterday morning saw the Bens coming into bat the second time with a deficit of 194 runs falling in trouble again before Waruna and Jason came to their rescue.

St Joseph’s were on top against Isipathana when play stopped for lunch on day two in their Under 19 match played at Darley Road. St Joseph’s resuming from their overnight score of 133 for 3 went on to make 202 for 9 before declaring. This was in reply to Isipathana’s score of 189. Isipathana batting the second were 70 for 4.
