Crunch time for Lankan rugby

By A rugby correspondent

Will the Annual General Meeting of The Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union be held on the 30th of this month take place as planned? The Sunday Times learnt that the President of the CR and FC, Jehan Canegratnam , who attended the last committee meeting of the Western Province Rugby Football Union has written to the relevant authorities, requesting that the meeting be declared Null and Void.

Wimal Senanayake the President of the WPRFU confirmed the receipt of this letter and also explained that this was a committee meeting summoned to decide on the nominations it proposes for the SLRFU council. He explained that the issue was that there was a secret ballot taken and the contents of the letter sent by the President of CR were that it should have been a vote by show of hands and nothing else.

Senanayake explained that it was for an AGM or an SGM that such show of hand was required. This was a committee meting and there is no written requirement on how the vote is to be taken. The practice was for such nomination recommendations to be by secret ballot and also there was no objection by the house though the issue was raised.

There is also speculation that this could lead to a possible suspension of the Council of the WPRFU so that a preferred nominee may have another opportunity if proposed by another province.

Thus, if by any chance, the proposed meeting is not held Rugby in Sri Lanka runs the risk of being cast out of the membership of the Governing body. If by any chance action is taken to suspend the WPRFU Council and the election is held, will the IRB buy this and or will they go ahead and continue to keep Sri Lanka out of the international scene.Interim Committee Chairman Dr. Maiya Gunasekera said that he has not received anything official up to the time of going to press.
