Doctor wanted in baby sale racket

By Leon Berenger

The police were hunting for a doctor in connection with the alleged attempted sale of a three-day old infant from his plush residence in Kollupitiya.

The doctor’s wife, the toddler’s mother and a female assistant were taken into custody yesterday during a sting operation by the Police Women’s and Child Bureau, police said.

They said the group had planned to sell the infant for Rs. 75,000 to a childless couple. Police are investigating information that the doctor was also behind illegal abortions and that his wife attended as a nurse in these operations.

Police were also looking into reports that the doctor and his wife encouraged young women pregnant out of wedlock to deliver their babies, promising the women buyers could be found for their children.

The doctor and his wife are suspected to have been in the racket for a considerable period of time, a senior officer with the Women’s and Child Bureau said. He also added that investigations were on to ascertain if the couple had any links with medical staff in State institutions.

The Police Women’s and Child Bureau are conducting further investigations.
