SLIIT launches Electronic Engineering Degree Programme

Marking yet another significant milestone in the Information Technology arena, Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) has launched an Electronic Engineering Degree in collaboration with the Sheffield Hallam University SHU, UK.

The new Degree programme runs for a three year period, the first two years of which entitle students to obtain a Diploma in Electronic Engineering (SLIIT) and BTEC Higher National Diploma in Electronic Engineering (Edexcel International UK). Students completing the Diploma, will have the opportunity to complete the final year of BEng (Hons) in Electronic Engineering of SHU either at SHU or at SLIIT.

This degree aims to provide the techniques and skills that will be needed by the next generation of electronic engineers. Main skills involved are circuit electronics, system design, instrumentation and software engineering. These topics form the crux of the new Electronic Engineering Degree.

Students who complete their Advanced Level in the Mathematics stream, with three passes in one sitting, qualify for this degree. They get to learn the scientific principles of electrical and electronic engineering and how to apply them in designing, creating, testing and improving electronic systems and products, in order to meet market requirements. Accordingly, the programme offers a series of subjects suitable for electrical and electronic engineers who can find suitable employment in many industries and organizations that use modern electronic technology.

Dr. Malith Wijesundara, Head of the Computer Systems and Networking Department, also in charge of the new Degree commented "Electronics is at the heart of the new industrial revolution. What's unique about this stream of study is the fact that it deals more with the hardware aspect. Always being receptive to the changing environment and identifying market trends, we at SLIIT thought it fit and a best timing to launch a Degree programme in Electronic Engineering.

We are happy to say that we succeeded in starting off with 100 students as our initial batch" he further stated. This degree is available only with the state Universities owing to the fact institutions are required to do fairly large investments towards infrastructure development to run a course of this nature. SLIIT went in with such an investment towards building relevant infrastructure.

The newly established Computer Systems and Networking Department of SLIIT has highly qualified, experienced and dedicated in-house academic staff and other resources. Academics and professionals who fulfill the above criteria have been recruited by SLIIT in order to provide students with an excellent learning experience.
