‘GREEN THE WORLD’ campaign

By Sheriefdeen M. Irshad

''Green the World'' campaign has been initiated under the Environment Action Area of Sri Lankan Youth Parliament (SLYP) with the aim of raising awareness amongst schools on the importance of Solid Waste Management and the issue of Global Warming and Climate Change.

The campaign has reached 3 schools with about 1500 students and teachers and is expected to reach more in the coming weeks. Though there are many awareness raising activities going on presently with the intention to address the need for Solid Waste Management practices and support recycling in Sri Lanka, still there exists a lack of awareness on the importance of Solid Waste Management, and most importantly about the relationship between Solid Waste Management and mitigation of Global Warming and Climate Change.

Considering this timely environmental need and demand, ''Green the World'' campaign has been initiated with the support of Eco-Care Sri Lanka and the Oxfam International Youth Partnerships (OIYP).

As a Sustainable Development and Environmental project affiliated to the Sri Lankan Youth Parliament, a school based Solid Waste Management Programme has been initiated in some schools in the Colombo District by this campaign.

''Green the World'' raises awareness (through seminars and interactive sessions) amongst school communities on the importance of Solid Waste Management, and thereby assist them with the setting up of waste management systems (the methodology of using different coloured separate bins for bio-degradable and non-biodegradable recyclable wastes) within the school premises, and to provide with the necessary guidance and strategic assistance, to implement waste management, successfully. The campaign also addresses the issue of Climate Change and highlights the close relationship between Solid Waste Management and mitigation of global warming.
