DVD Directory to promote tourism
By Susitha R. Fernando

A full digital travel directory with details of all the tourist destinations in the country and all other tourism related information to compress into a one digital video disc (DVD) is underway. A novel idea by well known film and teledrama producer, Ranjith Perera, the Sri Lanka Travel Directory on DVD format is to provide complete information and all the data pertaining to Sri Lanka tourism.

Historically, archeologically and culturally important sites, sunny beaches and blue seas and wild life spots with all the existing hotels, tour operators, rent a car service and all other tourism related business ventures, the distance in mileage and all other vital information that a tourist must know about Sri Lanka will be included cinematically in the way of a documentary film. The special feature of this DVD will be that mostly lesser known tourist attractions will be featured with detailed explanations on that particular area.

A project fully authorized and cooperated by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau of the Tourist Board, Managing Partner of 'Winson Films', Ranjith Perera is planning to release the DVD at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London from November 10-13, this year.

"Up to date we don't have anything to promote our country in audio-visual medium and this would be a useful guide to foreigners to get a real picture about our country and plan a tour according to his or her interest," describing the mega project to promote tourism in this country Ranjith Perera who was once in the travel and tourism industry said.

"It was an idea that was recurring in my mind for a long time and to highlight the sites and tourism related sports and businesses cinematically would be an attractive way to take our tourism industry to the world," he added. "Our challenge is to do this international standard," said Mr. Perera adding that he has completed the pre-production already.

The creative direction is to be done by the award winning director Christy Shelton Fernando.
"This is the first time such a project is launched to promote our tourism with the participation of all the stakeholders in the tourism industry including hoteliers and travel agents," said Ms. Madubhani Perera, Acting Director Marketing, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau.

"Production of a Sri Lanka Travel Directory on DVD format is a major project by Winsom Films which has a very good reputation for making good films and teledramas in this country and while welcoming this idea we give our full blessing for this composite work," she added.

The proposed first Directory will cover the period of 2009/2010 and thereafter it will be updated.
Initially the DVD will be produced in English with subtitles in other popular languages such as German, French, Italian, Japanese etc.
