The law is in place and a pioneering one at that. Whereas earlier it was considered a hush-hush issue, a strictly “family affair” now it is being discussed openly, with the law being weighted on the side of the hapless victim. Domestic violence has been in times past swept under the bedroom carpet, with even the victims not acknowledging that there was a problem and assuming that maybe it was what they deserved.
 
Not stinking garbage
Some 140 km south of Colombo is the picturesque Weligama bay, with countless fishing canoes floating on clear blue water that seems to glitter in the midday sun. The air is pleasantly warm and cool at the same time and there is a feeling of serenity all round. Yet, a mere few hundred metres away from this pretty picture is a sight one would hardly associate with serenity: a garbage dump.

When “Ozone-friendly”, “CFC free” labels started to appear in the early ’90s on products such as refrigerators, to many, it seemed just another marketing strategy, but in fact, these “ozone-friendly” alternatives may save lives. Skin cancer, cataracts and problems in the immune system are some of the effects of exposure to dangerous Ultra Violet (UV) rays that penetrate Ozone Holes in the atmosphere.
