Intimate monologues

Sex, love, rape, birth, mutilation, menstruation and other such aspects related to the vagina of the human body form the theme of a powerful play soon to be staged in Colombo.

Eve Ensler’s "The Vagina Monologues" will be in Colombo next month when Kaizaad Navroze Kotwal presents a Poor-Box Production of the show in association with Event Concept (Pvt) Ltd on October 22 at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel. Part proceeds will be donated to the humanitarian projects of the Rotary Foundation.

The production has been staged in over 72 countries and stars Dolly Thakore, Avantika Akerkar, Jayati Bhatia, Sonali Sachdev and Mahabanoo Mody- Kotwal. A recurring theme is the vagina as a tool of female empowerment and the ultimate embodiment of individuality.

The ‘Vagina Monologues’ is made up of several monologues read by different actors. They were based on interviews Eve Ensler conducted with 200 women about their views on sex, relationships and violence against women.

Originally written in 1996, Ensler says the purpose of the piece changed from a celebration of feminity to a movement to stop violence against women. Stars who have made guest performances at the show include Oprah Winfrey, Judi Dench, Julia Roberts, Whoopi Goldberg and Brooke Shields.
