Why are we treated like this?

It is a pity that the Senior Citizen’s Identity Card issued by the Department of Social Services, does not appear to be recognized by most institutions. It is only the Health Department and the banks that give due recognition to senior citizens. Recently, I went to the Kandy Railway Station to obtain a ticket on the Intercity train to Colombo.

There was a fairly long queue, and as my Senior Citizen’s Card refers to the transport service also, I attempted to get a ticket outside the queue using this card. I was referred to as “Uncle” and unceremoniously sent to the back of the queue. On my return I suffered the same fate at the Private Bus Intercity Stand in Pettah.

In other countries, senior citizens are highly respected and regarded. They are even given preferential and concessionary treatment at sports events, such as cricket and soccer matches.

I hope those in authority will advise various corporations and departments to extend this facility to senior citizens.
