The Cabinet has decided to allocate an additional Rs. four billion for the school mid-day programme, to the Rs. four billion already allotted to the programme.

This decision was announced by Transport and Highways and Mass Media the Minister Bandula Gunawardena in a Cabinet briefing held on October 4, broadening the scope of mid-day meals to another 1.8 million students.

The programme, already functioning under the theme “The best should be provided to the children”, currently gains Rs. four billion annually, providing mid-day meals to 1.8 million students in 7926 schools.

It was expected to prevent malnutrition and enhance food security for 51% of Sri Lankan school children, with the aid of UNICEF, the World Bank, the Chinese Government and private companies.

The programme would be conducted to achieve the Government’s goal of “No citizen should starve due to lack of food,” which the Government was trying to accelerate and expand, based on the district-based poverty statistics, through foreign aid received.
