Education Minister Susil Premajayantha, during an official visit to the USA, held a discussion with the representatives of the Gates Foundation and sought their help to improve the education sector in Sri Lanka.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Transforming Education Summit. The Minister while expressing his gratitude for the global development programme implemented by the Gates Foundation to develop the education sector in developing countries, invited the Foundation members to contribute and support academic activities in Sri Lankan public schools with modern technology and other equipment.

While highlighting that Sri Lanka had a free education policy from the Grade 1 to university level, he also sought the support of the Gates Foundation to increase the technical capacity of selected public schools in the country by replacing traditional blackboards with smart boards.

While stressing that investing in education was vital as the sustainable solution to the economic crisis also lies on education, Dr. Premajayantha also said Sri Lanka was currently facing difficulties in securing the necessary funds due to the prevailing economic situation. He insisted that currently, the Government was using funds for absolutely essential expenses in the local public education sector.

He also said students would be able to get the exposure to national and international education systems by using smart technology, if the Gates Foundation would join hands in investing in Sri Lanka’s education sector, thus enabling the Foundation to achieve its basic objectives.

Vice President Rick Harman, Education Director (Asia Pacific Region) Vincent Kwa and several other key officials represented the Gates Foundation at this discussion.
