Perahera arrangements get underway; accommodation an issue

A meeting to review the arrangements for the Kandy Esala Perahera – which commences on August 2 – was held at the maligawa auditorium on Friday. The meeting was chaired by Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela and District Secretary C Tennakoon.
At the meeting, Basnayake Nilame of Kandy Kataragama Devale Gemunu Walisundera pointed out that since there is no school vacation scheduled during this period, there would be a problem of housing performers in schools, as is usually done. He added that the authorities of the schools in concern would not listen to the Departmental Directors, saying that the schools have to be used and therefore there is a problem in accommodating artistes and Police personnel.
However, the Chief Secretary of the Province said that they could iron out this problem with the Education authorities in the Province.
Army, Police, STF, and other service personnel were present at the meeting with other civil servants who would look into the welfare of the devotees who visit to view the Perahera.
Basnayake Nilames Mahendra Ratwatte, Gayan Heenkenda, Gemunu Walisundera and S Herath were also present.
