The number of COVID-19 cases are on the rise with at least eight deaths during the week, the Health Ministry said yesterday.

The death toll this month has risen to 13.

COVID cases have increased with about 60 people being tested positive daily. Majority of those who died are above the age of 60, according to the Ministry.

This year so far 16,535 cases have been reported. Sixty eightw people were tested positive on July 22.

Meanwhile, Public Health Inspectors Union Chief Upul Rohana said the number of cases and deaths could be more than this as there were no PCR tests conducted on deceased persons and hospitals were facing a severe shortage of antigen test kits.

He requested the people to obtain the fourth dose (second booster dose) of the Pfizer vaccine before the  August 14 expirty date.

According to the Epidemiology Unit, though about eight million people have got the first booster dose (third vaccine) only 13,959 have received the second booster dose.

Mr. Rohana said the numbers were expected to increase due to people not maintaining distance and not wearing masks in crowded public transport and while in queues.
