Chinese rice donation for school children

About 1,000 metric tonnes of rice received from China as a donation will be distributed among low-income families with school-going children, the Education Ministry said.

It said the consignment, which arrived last week, was part of the 10,000MT donation China had pledged to Sri Lanka.

Accordingly, around 1,080,000 children in 7,925 schools would benefit from the programme. Most of them attend schools that have fewer than 100 students and are from rural areas and the plantation sector.

The programme is seen as a temporary substitute for the mid-day meal programme that came to a sudden halt last year after 30 years with suppliers saying that due to the price increases of food items, they were unable to provide meals at the government-quoted price of Rs. 30.

In an attempt to resume the programme, the Government has now agreed to pay suppliers Rs.60 per meal.

The ministry also has plans to launch a nutritional food programme in schools. A food cultivation programme by students in schools is also being considered to supplement the mid-day meal programme.
