A talent identification programme will be launched to utilise funds provided to local councils for sports development.

“There are about four million students whose sports talents can be further assessed and encouraged. It is unfortunate that there is a gradual decrease in students from rural villages pursuing sports. We have to find the reason and immediately take steps to encourage them,” said Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe.

To launch a successful talent identification programme, the Ministry will need the support of the Sports Development Department, Mahaweli Authority, Youth Council, Youth Corps and the Youth Conference, he added.
