Legal education to be added to school curriculum: Justice Ministry

Moves are underway to introduce legal studies to the education curriculum in a bid to create awareness among the people about the country’s laws.

At a media conference this week, Judicial Ministry’s Reforms Director Madusanka Dissanayake said necessary arrangements will be made to provide awareness of laws among Sri Lankans. He said mobile workshops were held in five different districts in the Northern province to make people aware of laws and they were given the necessary information through collaborations with different organisations such as the Prison Department.

Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa at the University of Colombo’s Department of Commercial Law said the long-term goal of public education is preparing students to be better citizens. He said the Government plans to include the subject in addition to civic education in Sri Lanka.

Senior DIG and Attorney-at-Law Ajith Rohana said laws govern our world and therefore legal studies should be taught to students.

“I agree with providing law education. Because basic understanding of the law can help students protect themselves and prevent many crimes from taking place. It should be well worth the investment,” he said.

“When getting a drivers’ licence people are provided with basic knowledge about the law. But how many are willing to follow the rules when it comes to driving?” he asked.

“If the youth are aware of the penalty for using and having heroin with them, they will not insist on using such drugs. Promoting the rule of law through education also helps students acquire the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes they need to contribute constructively to society. It allows them to positively shape public institutions and their policies, thereby encouraging non-violent and peaceful avenues,” the DIG added.
