Record breaking completion of the CIMA Professional Qualification in Sri Lanka

A student in Sri Lanka broke the record by completing The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) professional qualification in 10 months, which is normally completed in 2 – 2.5 years.

The student Sandil Mallikarachchi began to pursue the CIMA professional qualification in November 2020 and had recently completed the 16 exams through self-studying whilst being employed as a Management Trainee at Komuthi Engineering Services (Pvt) Limited.

“CIMA is by no means just an accounting qualification. It builds up a comprehensive knowledge of finance from scratch. With the three subject pillars of Accounting, Finance, and Management, CIMA offers exceptional education that would make a candidate stand out in any profession.

This is not just to credit the institute, but more to the practical skillset that the qualification equips a candidate such as myself with,” said Sandil.

“Studying with CIMA fundamentally changed my outlook on the world. Contrary to the popular notion of unempathetic cultures in the Finance sector, I was taught to look at a problem from the perspectives of many.

It is only through consensus that any decision can effectively be implemented in business as well as in any other arena. Even though this might seem common knowledge, I found the underlying economic justification intriguing.

I could not be unamazed by how these complex and sensitive subject areas were discussed so rigorously in the CIMA curriculum. Gradual progression of the content at the perfect pace not only retained my otherwise loose attention and interest but also inspired me to study finance at the post-graduate level. CIMA is indeed a truly well-rounded education in Finance,” added Sandil.

The CIMA professional qualification focuses extensively on digital finance to deliver finance professionals who can harness the full power of technology and data to create and add organisational value while supporting businesses to mitigate new risks.

The CGMA Competency Framework adds and incorporates the new area of digital skills to the four core existing knowledge areas of technical, business, leadership and people skills.

“We are more than pleased and proud of Sandil who is very determined and has managed to complete the CIMA professional qualification in just 10 months. We are very optimistic that he will go far in what he wants to accomplish in his career journey, and we will always be there to continue to guide him to learn, unlearn and relearn all the necessary knowledge the moment he becomes part of the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) family,” said Zahara Ansary, FCMA, CGMA, Sri Lanka Country Manager of The Association of International Certified Professional Accountants.

“The qualifications and learning resources for a profession should never stand still and need to take into account changes in areas such as new technologies and business practices. We regularly update the CIMA Professional Qualification, ensuring that the content remains relevant to management accounting, and continues to shape global, multi-skilled, dynamic professionals and the updated content will enhance our students’ employability by helping them develop the skills, competencies and mindsets employers are looking for in the digital age and these are the benefits for any CIMA students who completes the professional qualification, obtains membership and becomes a CGMA,” concluded Zahara.

The Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (The Association) is the unified voice of The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) & The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
