MoU to be signed between Kotelawala Defence University and Duke University

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and Duke University in the United States of America is to be signed for a research project on melioidosis.

Melioidosis, also called Whitmore’s disease, is an infectious disease that can infect humans or animals. The disease is caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. This is a disease common in tropical countries

Accordingly, a proposal for a research partnership between General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and Duke University is in the works, so that pre-diagnosis of the disease within Sri Lanka, to recognise and control it. The research partnership was approved by the Cabinet this week.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, as the Defence Minister, had submitted the proposal for entering into a sub-awarding contract between the two parties for implementing the proposed research project and an agreement of exchanging materials.
