Every year lakhs of students pass their A-Level examinations in Sri Lanka. Many students aspire to continue their higher education from reputed colleges. Selection in a reputed college is considered as a stepping-stone for getting a stable progressive job which, in turn, helps them to achieve career success. However, this isn’t true anymore. Today with advancement in Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence most of the basic jobs are taken over by technology. Only students who keep in pace with the new demands of evolving technology, are able to secure good jobs that pave way to great careers.

Keeping this in mind, HCL – a USD 10Bn+ Global Tech company with 159,000+ employees, recently launched a path breaking and disruptive early career programme, HCL TechBee for A-Level completed students in Sri Lanka. This programme is designed totrain students and prepare them for an assured entry-level IT jobs (roles: Software developer/ IT Analyst)at HCL Sri Lanka.

Candidates undergo 12 months of classroom training and on-the-job training (apprenticeship). On successful completion, candidates start their IT careers at HCL- A Global Tech giant, with a starting salary that is on par with the industry standards. While working at HCL, candidates can also continue to pursue their higher education (BSc/ BIT degrees) from Horizon Campus. Through this work integrated learning program, students have an opportunity to apply concepts they learn while working, thereby making them experts in their job roles.

The programme is based on the philosophy that A-Level students with proper guidance and training can perform the tasks that an engineer does. This “beyond the conventional” ideology is quite disruptive and has been tested successfully in other countries.

How does this differ from the conventional path?

Firstly, TechBee – HCL’s Early Career Programme gives students a head start to professional IT career. By the time A-Level students, opting for the conventional path, complete their degree, TechBee candidates will have 3 years of IT experience and will pursue a BSc(Hons)/ BIT degree programme.

Secondly, students become financially independent during the training period itself. They take home, attractive monthly allowance during their apprenticeship period. Post completion of their training, they start earning from young age of 18-19 with a starting salary that is at par with industry standards. They are already ahead of their peers and have an early start, a stepping-stone for a giant career leap.
