In a bid to overcome the shortage of teachers in village schools the Education Ministry has devised a plan to hire more teachers.

For this people who have passed the G.C.E. A/L exams, development assistants and those who failed to complete the teaching diplomas will be considered for teaching posts. A practical examination will be held to select the teachers.

The decision to make the recruitments were made after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa visited several villages under the ‘Gama Samaga Pilisandarak’ programme and found out that several schools were short of teachers.

The Governors in the provinces have been told to provide information about the requirement of teachers as well as instances of excess teachers in some of the schools.  The Ministry too will conduct its own survey.

The teachers will be recruited to teach English, Information Technology, Home Economics and aesthetic studies. Around 120 students who failed to complete their diploma in teaching will be among those recruited.

The Ministry has already informed the Public Service Commission about the recruitment programme. Meanwhile 729 teachers will also be recruited to teach foreign languages including Japanese, Korean and Italian.

An Education Ministry official said the recruitment programme does not contradict existing Service minute for teachers.
