Strict action to be taken against Govt.’s move to appoint SLEAS officers as school principals

The Education unions have collectively written a letter to the Education Ministry calling on the Government to immediately scrap its decision on filling up vacant positions for principal posts  in schools without holding relevant competitive exams, the Ceylon Teachers Union  (CTU) said last week.

This follows the Government’s move to fill 4600 vacancies existing in national and provincial schools by granting appointments to performing and acting principals already serving in schools.

The CTU, the Ceylon Teachers service union, the teacher education service union and the principals union had jointly made a request in the letter to the Education Ministry Secretary, asking him to refrain from adopting short cut methods in the appointments.

Meanwhile the CTU said there was another move to absorb 271 personnel from the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service (SLEAS ) into the
system.

CTU Secretary Joseph Stalin said a cabinet paper in this regard had been prepared.

Only Sri Lanka Principal Service personnel can be appointed to the posts.

He said this was a ploy to appease party henchmen and people claiming to be politically victimised.

The Government said holding competitive exams would take up to one year to organise, and due to the urgency of the situation it has been forced to scrap the exams.

The unions said if the Education Ministry persists with its decision they would collectively take a decision to oppose the move.

The unions have warned the Ministry of massive trade union action unless the Cabinet decision is withdrawn.

“We are planning on a major protest if the Government continues with its decision,” Stalin said. (CC)
