The Cabinet has announced a decision to accredit the National Defence Academy (NDA) under the Kotelawala Defence University (KDU). This will be done so that postgraduate degrees can be provided for NDA students.

Accordingly approval has been granted to draft a Sri Lanka National Defence Academy Act for the NDA to be incorporated by the Act of Parliament.

The act will provide legal provisions for the NDA in terms of eligibility and qualifications for students who complete eleven months of full time courses successfully, so they can be awarded masters degrees and doctorates.

This goes in parallel with the practice of many countries awarding masters degrees and doctorates through their national defence academies for parallel courses at national universities.

The academic activities of the institute will begin in May this year. (CC)
