Rotary launch Varna 2021

When Sri Lanka declared a total lockdown in March 2020, many people became virtual prisoners at home, ignorant of the danger posed by Covid-19. Rotary realized that education, jobs in plush offices or possessions were worthless unless the country can be supported said Dr Rohantha Athukorala at the launch of Varna 2021 at Shangrilla Hotel.

Varna was the Awareness Programme Art Competition targeting the Western Province students organized by the Rotary Club of  Negambo in partnership with Rotaract Club of Negambo and Interact Club of Negambo headed by the Project Director Modara Weerasinghe.

The genesis of Stop the Spread was a behavioural awareness communication programme to prevent people from contracting the deadly virus. The Programme instilled the discipline of washing hands, wearing masks, respecting social distance, and checking temperatures eminent sportsmen as ambassadors. If some one values the brand Ambassordor Programme alone is worth over a 1 billion rupees said Project Director Dr Athukorala. We thank the Sri Lankan cricket team members and the past seven captains, the top ruggerites of Sri Lanka and National Olympic Committee who supported the programme. The Ambassordorial Programme cut accross 180 athletes who are gold medallions from Commonwealth and South Asian games he said.

The Varna art competition attracted over one hundred entries. The school winners were Ave Maria Convent Negombo, Loyola College Negombo, Kudapaduwa Sinhala Mix School, Newsted Girls School Negombo, N.I.C.E. International School Negombo, St. Francis Salese Kanishta Vidyalaya Negombo and St. Nicholas International School Negombo. The winning entries were captured in the 2021 Calendar of Rotary said Modara Weerasinghe the Project Chairperson.
