Applications open for February intake

The glory of ANC reverberates across time as one of Sri Lanka’s grandest educational institutes. Known for its affiliation with an assortment of world renown globally recognized top ranked universities, ANC is credited for many success stories that were written due to its guidance of students in the right path in the field of learning that is best suited for them.

Students of ANC are granted the privilege of gaining inspiration from industrial experts from across the globe. Representing University of West London Dr. Phillip Elliot-Wright  eagerly shared a sneak peak of life at his fortress of knowledge.

As the Course Leader, he spoke on the relevance of the LLM in Business and Commercial Law offered by UWL (via ANC Education) for an aspiring future legal practitioner.

Q   :   What was your motivation behind taking up the mantle of Business and Commercial Law?

Dr. Elliot has been the course leader for the LLM in Business and Commercial Law since its inaugural launch in 2008 in the UK. It is only appropriate that he was the ideal fit for the task due to his strong belief in enabling students to gain the best opportunities available to fulfill their potential.

The key to achieving their potential is to be able to demonstrate their full range of capabilities academically and vocationally.

Making this LLM available outside the United Kingdom provides opportunities for those who otherwise lacked access to means to unlock their hidden potential. It gives them the right set of circumstances to demonstrate their abilities to prospective or existing employers.

Regardless if it is to seek employment or a promotion, a person has to stand up and say that they are capable of performing ‘more’. That raises the question of how that particular person can demonstrate the ‘more’ that they allegedly are able to perform. The LLM in Business and Commercial Law is the stepping stone needed to answer that question.

Ever since its launch, the LLM was designed as an offering to the entire global market. It gives students the power to function in the global economy and the right set of skills to tackle the challenges of the 21st century.

Q :   Can you share a glimpse of the student life at University of West London and the Law School?

The educational roots of UWL stems back to the 19th century (1850s). The university is built on the land which was once the Ealing Grove School which was built by Lady Byron; wife of renown poet Lord Byron. The journey towards becoming a fully-fledged university in 1992 is a tale to be remembered.

The vocation oriented spirit that was built by UWL since its humble beginnings as a college for agricultural workers is as relevant now as it was back then.

The primary focus as a modern university is vocational/ skill and career orientated education. At present, The Guardian University Guide for 2021 has ranked UWL as the 15th best university for Law in the UK whilst bestowing it the 34th rank out of the 121 universities in the entirety of UK.

Life at UWL is focused on helping a wide range of students; from ages 18 and beyond. Education and vocational output is given prominence rather than procuring academic research. UWL is currently home to a selection of students with established careers hoping to procure that one defining factor that elevates them to better positions.

At first sight, it is impossible to come to the conclusion that UWL is an ancient establishment built in the 1850s. A quick trip around the university premises gives the beholder modern refurbished buildings equipped with modern technologies and facilities fit to cater to the whims and needs of the current generation of students.

The students focus rarely wavers from their goals due to the many career fairs hosted by the university. Inspiration is continuously supplied through industrial experts who regularly attend these career fairs and seminars. This gives students a general feel of what to expect in the real world.

Q  :   Why is the LLM in Business and Commercial law offered by UWL reputed in Sri Lanka?

It offers one of the best platforms/avenues for students to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding for operating in the legal environment of business and commercial law.

A module included in the LLM is ‘International Arbitration’. It encompasses transactional workshops that enable students to actually practice their craft in a simulated environment. In these simulations, they are no longer students but fully-fledge international arbitrators assigned to resolve crucial matters.

‘International Litigation’ follows a similar approach. It comprise of interactive workshops and simulated transactional exercises. Students are entitled to learn and practice the intricacies of these aspects of the law and commerce alongside veteran practitioners. This gives them the confidence to persevere in the future.

The content that is offered is under constant review. The staff members who design learning material are active practitioners. Experts in the craft are constantly vigilant to make sure that the content delivered is updated. External speakers contribute their knowledge and experience to ensure that the content is reflective of what is practiced and to make sure that the real life applications are conveyed appropriately.

The LLM attracts a wide range of students. Even those who follow similar associated disciplines; business, finance and banking show preference to this particular program. That is a key reason for offering the LLM in Sri Lanka.

Q :   What is the history between UWL and ANC Education?

Ties were initially made with ANC Education in 2012. ANC understood the need to establish a British University franchise in Sri Lanka. To the delight of the Sri Lankan community, the university that was requested was UWL. Relevant discussions were made with representatives from both parties and a mutually beneficial and long lasting partnership was forged by gifting Sri Lankan students access to a world class LLM program.

Throughout the years, the franchise evolved beyond law. Currently, UWL offers other advanced diplomas in Business, IT, Hospitality and Psychology. The legal seeds that were planted in 2012 has grown into a well-nourished tree come the dawn of 2021.

The upcoming intake of the LLM Programme is in February 2021 and the University of West London invites prospective students to contact ANC Education on 0777449966 for more details on the LLM Programme and the Scholarship Opportunities available.
