Sri Lanka Model United Nations (SLMUN) returns for its 13th session this year with the promise of a brand-new experience. Considering the status quo around the globe, the theme for the upcoming conference is ‘A world in conflict’; aiming to unite today’s youth to stand up against misgovernance and injustice and creating a better future for all.

The 13th Session

The COVID-19 outbreak has drastically changed the way we live, from learning to business to socialising. Humans have adapted to the new normal of social distancing. We at SLMUN too, have altered the conference to adhere to the health guidelines published by the Ministry of Health and will be conducting our first ever virtual conference this year.

SLMUN 2020 will take place via Microsoft Teams and is scheduled to be held on the 12th and 13th of September 2020. We will be stimulating 11 outstanding and diverse committees this year, from  the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) to International Press Corps (IPC).

The Main Workshop and Practice Debates

The Main Workshop of SLMUN took place on the 29th of August 2020. Typically, this workshop would take place at a prominent school. However, this year the workshop was conducted via Microsoft Teams. The Executive Committee provided a crash course of  MS Teams, explained procedure, and introduced their respective committees. The session concluded successfully with over 200 delegates tuning in.

The Practice Debates were held over the 5th and 6th September 2020, where the delegates got the opportunity to get an idea of how conference will operate this year. Debating and deliberating virtually was a novel experience to many of them and we hope that the session held over the weekend will prepare them for what is to come.
