Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union (SLASU) has decided to call off the proposed selection trials set for this weekend to pick swimmers for the 56th Milo Malaysian Invitational Age Group Swimming Championships.

SLASU had earlier planned for a two-day selection trial at the Sugathadasa Swimming Complex for the school swimmers to be sent to Malaysia for the three-day championships, but after Malaysia restricted incoming travellers due to the prevailing global crisis on the wide-spreading Coronavirus, ahead of the event scheduled for March 5 to 8 in Kuala Lumpur.

SLASU President Nethru Nanayakkara said it was too early to send swimmers to Malaysia due to the prevailing fear of Coronavirus in Malaysia.

“I spoke to the organisers last night and they told me they have not cancelled the championships as yet. But, March is too early to send our swimmers due to the prevailing coronavirus threat. We will make a decision if they reschedule the championships,” said Nanayakkara.

Over 100 swimmers would have been selected if the scheduled selection trials were held. SLASU had already informed all the invited swimmers for the two-day selection trials in Colombo.
