The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said last week, that a sum of Rs. 10.27 million allocated for school expenditure for the year 2018 was not utilised by the Education Ministry under the last government.

The Auditor General Report 2018 showed that a sum of Rs. 5.4 million allocated for 21 subjects as capital expenditure and a sum of Rs. 4.87 million allocated as recurrent expenditure for four subjects had not been spent by the ministry. The monies were returned to the treasury. CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said this shows that the ministry had no suitable plans to develop schools. They had let the government allocations go wasted without benefiting school children.

He said that in the past years the education sector had lobbied for an allocation of six percent GDP from the budget. However it is unable to efficiently handle a 2.2 percent allocation.

In 2018, a total sum of Rs.102.8 billion was allocated for education.

“This action of the Education Ministry only deprived the upliftment of school education,” Mr Stalin said.
