The Ceylon Teachers Service Union said at least the Z-score system needs to be made use of, to recruit teachers to the National Colleges of Education if they were upgraded.

Higher Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena said the policy approval of the cabinet of ministers was granted for the proposal jointly presented by the Education Minister and the Higher Education Minister. The proposal was approved to provide an opportunity for teachers to become graduates once the National Colleges of Education are upgraded.

Cabinet approval was also granted for a committee of education and higher education experts to be put together, to perform relevant academic and legal proceedings, Minister Gunawardena said.

CTSU General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said high Z-score marks should be a requirement to recruit teachers to the institute, to ensure that these teachers would graduate will be the necessary qualifications.

Minister Gunawardena said necessary legal amendments will be introduced to ensure that valid degrees are offered to the teachers. He said the proposal introduced would offer a solution to the country’s lack of trained teachers.
