Walala A. Rathnayake Central College established two new meet records while St. Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya set up one out of the three records shattered on the second day of the All-Island Schools Relay Championships, conducted by Ministry of Education and worked off at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo yesterday.

Only four finals were held yesterday and the quartets from Walala A. Rathnayake Central won three gold medals. The Peterite Under-20 team clocked 7:58.62 minutes in the 4x800m to erase the previous record of 7:59.5 set by Walala A. Rathnayake Central College last year.

Both girls and boys of Under-18 teams of Walala A. Rathnayake Central set the other two new records. Their boys’ 4x800m team finished the race in 8:12.99 minutes, erasing the previous record of 8:13.7 minutes and the girls took the gold with a new meet record, clocking 9:28.83 minutes to shatter the record of 9:57.2 minutes set last year.

Twenty-four finals are scheduled for today, the final day of the three-day championships in which 20 new meet records have already been broken with the 17 on day one.

The organisers had earlier planned to host the relay carnival at the D.B. Welagedara Stadium in Kurunegala but suddenly it was shifted to Colombo.
