Jaffna Hindu pull off 4-wicket win over Ananda

In a rain curtailed 8th Annual Cricket Encounter between Ananda College, Colombo and Jaffna Hindu College for the Sivagurunathan Memorial Trophy, Jaffna Hindu College pulled off a four wicket win with 2.8 overs to spare. The match was played at the Jaffna University Grounds last Saturday.

The match was reduced for 20 overs a side due to the heavy rain fell on the Jaffna peninsula. Ananda College winning the toss and batted first to score 79 for the loss of five wickets in their allotted overs.

Rometh Sathindu stood alone for Ananda with a fighting 44 runs helped Ananda to guide them to their totalp, while the front line batsmen were sent back to the pavilion by the Jaffna Hindu bowlers. Satindu’s innings included with three hits to the boundary and one over it. Priyanthan bowled best to the Northern school to capture two wickets for 13 runs.

Chasing a victory target of 80 runs Jaffna Hindu College too didn’t find things easy as the Anandian bowlers kept them in check. Though they lost six wickets in reaching the target a combined batting effort took them past the Ananda total with 2.8 overs to spare.

In the Old Boys encounter for the Arjuna Ranatunga Trophy as bad light stopped play it was declared joint winners to share the trophy. Old Anandians batting first put up a respectable 115 for the loss of five wickets in their 10 overs. In their chase Old Jaffna Hindu faced only four overs as bad light brought to a halt of the match. Jaffna Hindu were 39 for 2 wickets when the match was called off.

Sachitra Senanayake was adjudged the Man of the Match. World Cup winning and former Ananda captain Arjuna Ranatunga graced the occasion as Chief Guest and distributed the awards.
