Sandu Savindi of Visakha Vidyalaya clinched two gold medals on the third day of the 45th National Age Group Championships, worked off  at the Sugathada Stadium Swimming Complex, Colombo yesterday.

Savindi, took the 200m freestyle gold with a record timing of 2:18.29 minutes and later won the 50m Butterfly gold finishing the final in stunning 29.94 seconds.

The day three of the four-day Age Group Championships, featured 36 finals which started at 4.30pm. Out of the 36 finals, there were two direct qualifications for two finals, the Girls Over-20 50m Butterfly and 100m Backstroke events.

Dilekha Goonewardena finished the 100m backstroke final in 1:19.41 minutes competing in a one-swimmer event while Pawani Charithma clocked 48.32 seconds in the 50m Butterfly final, after a solo run.

Sri Lanka’s backstroke specialist Akalanka Peries, won the 100m backstroke. He competed in the 50m Butterfly final and reached the touching pad in 25.63 seconds to win the Gold medal.  Visakha Vidyalaya’s Savindi took the 50m butterfly Gold finishing the final in 29.94 seconds.

Binura Thalagala of Lyceum International School, Nugegoda won the 100m backstroke gold with the superb timing of 1:12.70 minutes.

The meet also serves as a trial event for the Asian Age Group Swimming Championship, to be held in late September. At the time of going to press, the SLASU had not released the official results.
