More than 30,000 teachers are to be trained to guide students to use the Tabs to be issued to them shortly.

In order to facilitate the use of the Tabs, the classrooms also are to be provided with Wifi facilities in some 1,000 schools, according to Education Minister of Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.

He said that training will be provided on how to use the Tab .

A 3-month training will be provided for the teachers with the Ministry of Education (MoE) prepared programmes, to ensure they could guide the students accordingly.

He said that discussions were currently also in progress with the Ministry of Digital Infrastructure on providing the Wifi facility.

The Cabinet this week approved the proposal to issue Tabs after a delay of about 3 years, due to objections by President Maithripala Sirisena, on the grounds that the project was costly.

But the UNF government argued that the project was beneficial for the students to gain advanced knowledge, by using Tabs for their studies.

The Government has cut down the cost to Rs 4.1 billion, from the initial Rs 5 billion.

Minister Kariyawasam said that necessary safeguards will be taken to ensure that the Tabs are not misused by the students. One of the safeguards is that students can use the Tabs only in school.
