Cabinet, this week, approved a proposal by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, as Minister of National Policies, Economic Affairs and Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera, to provide financial assistance to non-State Higher Education Institutions (HEI), accredited under the Enterprise Sri Lanka Programme. Government decided that the funds remaining from the Accelerating Higher Education Expansion and Development (AHEAD) project, will be used for this purpose.
The Cabinet noted that some 150,000 students qualify to enter State universities, but only about 25,000 gain placements and therefore, various programmes were underway to support non-State HEIs.

The AHEAD programme supports students who fail to enter State universities . Cabinet also decided to appoint a Committee to monitor this Financial Assistance to the non-State HEIs. – MC
