The Department of Commercial Law of the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, is to offer both a Diploma in Commercial Law and a Certificate Course in Intellectual Property Law for interested and suitably qualified applicants, commencing August 3, 2019. Both the Diploma and Certificate Course are to be offered in English, Sinhala and Tamil, to the required minimum number of eligible applicants.

Why a Diploma in Commercial Law?

Commercial Law puts in place, regulates and navigates the framework in a complex, fast paced and globalized corporate environment. From Companies to partnerships, to the minor contracts we engage in every day, Commercial Law forms an intrinsic part of our day to day lives. The need to familiarize oneself with Commercial Law is no longer specific to Lawyers alone.

Objectives of a Diploma in Commercial Law?

The Diploma caters to both lawyers who lack familiarity in Commercial Law and non-Lawyers. It aims to equip students with an understanding of basic concepts, principles and theories in relation to business contracts, company law, partnership law, information technology law and employment law, while also facilitating students in the application of conceptual and theoretical foundations and statutory provisions to contemporary issues of commercial law.

Eligibility for Diploma in Commercial Law

Possess any 1 of the following:

  • A Degree or a professional qualification from a recognized institution
  • 3 passes at the GCE A/L, with 2 years experience in the relevant field
  • 6 Credit passes at GCE O/L, with 5 years experience in the relevant field
  • 7 years experience in the relevant field.
  • Certificate in Intellectual Property Law

Intellectual Property Law is one of the fastest-growing and current areas of Law, not only in Sri Lanka, but worldwide. Intellectual Property governs copyright, trademark, patent, industrial design, and geographical indications. When a product is you purchased, the Law of trademark governs whether or not that product is an original or a fake. In music, the Law of copyright governs whether the composer and singer will be paid their dues, or whether someone else is illegally benefitting from it. When purchasing drugs from a pharmacy, the Law of patent will regulate who has the authority to manufacture those drugs according to proper standards.

Objectives of Certificate Course in Intellectual Property Law?

It caters to Lawyers who have not studied this area before, as well as to non-Lawyers who find that some of these topics have become essential in their professions or day-to-day activities. Teaching methods will combine theory with practical examples, descriptions of case Law as well as the international Legal framework that governs this area, to provide a contextual approach to the subject.

How do I know if I am qualified to follow the Certificate Course in Intellectual Property Law?

Applicants should possess a minimum of 5 Credit passes, including in English, at one and the same sitting of the GCE Ordinary Level examination. Knowledge of Law is not necessary.
