Navy nabs eight persons engaged in illegal fishing

The Navy apprehended eight persons engaged in illegal fishing in seas off Kokkuthudai recently.
A group of a naval personnel attached to a craft in the Eastern Naval Command, during a patrol carried out in the seas off Kokkuthudai, apprehended these eight persons for using banned nets for illegal fishing activities.

Along with the suspects, two dinghies, two outboard motors, three banned fishing nets and 565kg of illegally caught fish were also taken into naval custody. The suspects have been identified as residents of the Pulmodai area. The suspects, along with the fishing gear and the stock of fish, were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries-Mullaitivu for legal action. The Navy also recovered 20 unauthorised fishing nets in the Batticaloa lagoon area, on Friday.

Naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command, during a patrol conducted in the lagoon area of Batticaloa today, recovered the fishing nets.
Subsequently, these unauthorised fishing nets were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries-Batticaloa for legal action.
