Some 394,000 candidates sitting this year’s GCE Ordinary Level examination have so far been issued with new National Identity Cards (NIC), the Registrar of Persons Department said. Registrar General Viyani Gunatilake said the department had prioritised the issuance of National Identity Cards to examination candidates and except for about 1,000 applicants, others had been issued the NICs on time.

About one thousand applications are on hold due to shortcomings in documents submitted by the applicants. They have been sent letters, urging them to rectify the errors and obtain the NICs before the exams begin, Mr. Gunatilake said.
