Raising more than Rs 25 million so far, the 9th consecutive ‘Run For Their Lives’ hits Colombo on Sunday, December 9. Organised by the Rotaract Club of Colombo Uptown, the run is conducted in aid of the Apeksha Hospital, the National Cancer Institute in Maharagama. The run starts at 7 a.m. at Race Course, but you can join in at any time.

Doing their bit: Participants at a previous ‘Run’

“Organizing Run For Their Lives has been an exciting and overwhelming event that we all look forward to every year. We have come across many obstacles and difficult times. However, the ability of creating an impact in the life of another drives us to organize this project to our fullest potential,” says Tharushi Nissanka, one of the Chairpersons of Run For Their Lives.

In the fresh morning air, the event will start off with a stimulating warm-up session and then the participants will ready to begin the 5 km run.

Along the way, there will be many different stalls, from food and beverages, to cosmetic items as well as stalls dedicated to various important causes. Participants can thus stop whenever they feel inclined and take in these carnival-themed activities. The run is thus designed for any person to enjoy, whether athletic or not with the main idea being to support the aim of raising funds to fight cancer.

Participants can register by heading to The Embazzy on Flower Road, Colombo 7 between 8 a.m. and 5.30 p.m., and filling a quick form. After a payment of Rs. 700, you pick up a Run For Their Lives t’ shirt. Minors will need a signature of a parent to run and registration is also possible as corporate teams of 10 – which costs Rs. 20,000 per team. In addition to the t’shirts, corporate teams will also be getting Run For Their Lives hats and will be able to put up a banner at the venue. You could also register on the day of the run by paying Rs. 500 but you then don’t receive the t’shirt.

The registration fee is a donation to the Maharagama Cancer Hospital and will not be used for any expenses of the Run, the cost of which is covered through sponsorships. The funds raised will be donated to the National Cancer Institute to purchase medicine and equipment.

The Rotaract Club is looking forward to greater participation this year -over 4000 participants. If you too would like to join Run For Their Lives and aid the fight against cancer make your way to Race Course at 7 a.m. on December 9.
